Let Loose with the #LitBall - UW English Society's End-Of-Term Event


Guess what? We're hosting a literary ball.
What does that mean? We invite you to the Bomber dressed as a character from literature or in semi-formal attire.
Thursday, April 3, 9pm at the Bomber
$10 entry at the door, so please say "Yes" on Facebook if you are planning to come so we can get an idea of the numbers.
Your ticket covers appetizers but feel free to order anything else on your own tab.
The event is 19+ and all UW students are welcome. You are allowed to sign in one non-UW guest each.

There will be prizes for the best costumes as well as ticket and draw prizes available.

Minutes Week 6 - Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Minutes for the English Society meeting taking place on Tuesday, February 25th, 2014.
Members present : Janessa M, Matt S, Amanda W, Amanda C, Curtis G, Hillary U 
Meeting called to order at 2:45 pm by president Janessa M.

1) Book club next week
  • Could turn it into a general discussion or book appreciation night

2) Lit Ball
  • Out of school people can be signed in
  • We need to start thinking about food and menus soon
  • We are budgeting about 300 dollars for food, and 200 dollars for decorations
  • Ask the DJ and photography clubs for volunteers
  • Looking into a balloon arch and a chocolate fountain
  • There is a costume store in Kitchener we could suggest

3) Codex
  • TBD

Minutes January 28, 2014

Minutes for the English Society meeting taking place Tuesday, January 28th.
Members present : Curtis G, Amanda W, Amanda C, Naomi W, Matt S, Hillary U, Sai
Meeting called to order at 2:46 pm by Secretary Hillary Uniac

1) Book Club
  • We will serve tea, coffee, and hot chocolate in addition to the potluck items
  • Start advertising a week in advance
  • The meetings will be held in Room 334
  • The 2nd book club should focus on plays, such as The Glass Menagerie, and The Importance of Being Earnest
  • We would like to have it on March 3rd in the same room
  • The final book club should be March 24th, and be about Children's Lit or a short story
  • $20 Words Worth gift card prize
2) Meet and Greet
  • The party room at Symposium
  • Thursday, February 6, 7-9pm
3) Masquerade Ideas
  • The Bomber, April 3
  • $10 for ticket
  • We should have a photographer or a photobooth
  • We will make a suggestion list for costumes
  • Think of names / advertising for next week
  • Keep in mind that this is a literary event
4) Treasurer Report
  • Our budget is about $800 for the term
5) Other
  • We should use the poetry slam list to let people know about the Masquerade
  • Send your "About Mes" to Janessa - Ideas for topics include program, what you like about English, your favourite book, and what you are currently reading
  • Amanda C to post the first book review on the blog
  • Matt to do his book review on "The Road"
  • We will get Heather to put our blog on the Facebook page

Minutes - January 21, 2014

Minutes for the English Society meeting taking place on Tuesday, January 21st, 2014.
Meeting called to order at 2:45 pm by President Janessa Mann.
Members present : Curtis G, Matt S, Amanda W, Amanda C, Janessa M, Hillary U.

1) Book Club
  • The first book chosen was Fahrenheit 451
  • Amanda W will get us a room from Emily H
  • We will be having a potluck at the event
  • Scheduled for Monday, February 10th from 5-7pm
2) Meet and Greet
  • We would like to hold the event at Symposium
  • Amanda will call Symposium for information
  • The poster design should involve cake
  • Tentative date of Thursday, January 30th
3) The End of Term event (Which will be revealed later once things are firm)
  • The Codex will be launched at this awesome event
  • Submissions for the Codex will be due February 25th, at 2pm
  • The actual event has a tentative date of Friday, March 28th at 7pm
  • We will be selling tickets for the event
4) Other Items of Interest
  • Amanda C will send the correct blog link to Jen Harris
  • We could host a literary trivia night some time throughout the term
  • We should each review a book on the blog throughout the term
  • We could also interview profs for the blog

CODEX Submissions due Tuesday, February 25 @ 2pm

Did you miss out on your chance to submit to our literary magazine last term? Or you loved it so much you want to do it again?



Submissions are due Tuesday, February 25 @ 2pm to our email: uwenglish.society@gmail.com.
We are planning to give out hard copies of the CODEX both at our office (HH 260) and at our end of term event which will be revealed at a later date.

Details:
  • Longer submissions will be excerpted and a PDF will become available both here and on our Facebook page.
  • Anything is welcome: short essays, short stories, poetry, lyrics, comics... 
  • Our editors might email you back with suggestions/questions
  • Make sure to double-check how your formatting showed up on the .doc or PDF you send

Winter 2014

We're baaaack!
We had our first meeting Tuesday, January 14 and we discussed some fun ideas.
We will be having a book club this month, so vote on the Facebook page for the first novel!
We are also looking to have some sort of event off-campus where we can meet some profs, have food and drinks.
The last event is too awesome for me to post here yet because if it ends up being impossible, you'd probably cry. But you won't look like yourself...........

Minutes November 20, 2013

Minutes for the English Society meeting taking place on Wednesday, November 20th, 2013.

Meeting called to order at 2:30 pm by President Janessa M.

1) Poetry Slam
  • Ticket cut-off is at midnight tonight
  • There will be a buffet-style menu
  • The final head-count is to be reported tomorrow
  • Amanda W to confirm sound-check and set-up times
  • Attendees can pick up tickets in the office this Friday
  • We need one more judge
  • No response back from Imprint yet

Sweater orders are closed, and have been sent in
Email the Codex submitters to come pick up a copy
Next Wednesday is our last meeting of the term!

Minutes Wednesday November 13, 2013

Minutes for the English Society meeting taking place on Wednesday, November 13th, 2013.

Meeting called to order at 2:30 pm by President Janessa Mann

1) Poetry Slam
  • The event is now 19+, and the tickets will be stamped accordingly
  • Imprint can send a reporter. Amanda W will contact them
  • People can pay at the door, but cannot purchase tickets at the door
  • Beth Murch is our feature poet!
  • There is some interest in having a similar event next term, though this might not be practical
  • We need an attendance count by Thursday morning of next week
  • Amber can put up the posters 
2) Codex
  • It looks great, thanks Curtis! :)
  • Can pick them up hanging outside the office
3) Sweaters
  • We will now be ordering our sweaters from Swaggerloo, which will reduce our costs by about 1/3
  • Sweaters are now $10.00 cheaper
  • The orders have been extended by another week
4) Ideas for next term
  • Board game night
  • Another meet and greet
  • Another Codex (begin calling for submissions at the beginning of next term) and a launch with an open-mic theme
  • A book club with once-monthly meetings including potluck dinners
  • A seminar on writing papers

UW English Society Presents: A Poetry Slam!

 
 
The event will be 19+

Fill out the Google Form to reserve your tickets and indicate if you wish to compete.
 
Tickets are $5 and include entry and food. (You pay for your own drinks.) You may reserve the tickets and pay for them at the door, but no "walk-ins" will be for sale.

To compete:
Competitors need two pieces of original poetry (they don't have to be memorized) and are allowed 3 minutes to perform in each round.
First Round: 12 Poets
Final Round: Top 5 Poets
 
Our Feature Poet who will perform between the two rounds is Beth Murch, a nationally acclaimed slam poet!

Minutes for the English Society meeting taking place on Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

First Year Ambassadors Present : Eleni Z, Emily, Tatianna, Apoorva

Meeting called to order by president Janessa Mann at 2:32 pm

1) Codex
  • Curtis is currently working on the layout
  • We stayed within the budget
  • The launch party has been cancelled due to low interest (Nov. 8)
  • We will invite those who submitted to perform during the open mic slot for the Poetry Slam
2) Poetry Slam
  • Sarah Tolmie to be a judge
  • Matt will be the backup M.C.
  • Amanda to post sample videos to the event page
  • We will sell tickets in the vendor's alley on Tuesday, 11-4 pm
3) Sweaters
  • We currently have  the minimum orders
  • The deadline will be extended to November 13th, 2013

First Movie Night! The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The English Society is going to host bi-weekly movie nights!

To start, we are watching "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," originally a novel by Stephen Chbosky.

We are accepting all types of literature: plays, short stories, poems, essays, comic strips... Whatever you want!
We will publish a hard copy as well as an online PDF in November.
